About MeErin Casey, MS, RD, LDHello! Thank you for your interest in NuYOU Nutrition Counseling!
My name is Erin and I am a Registered Dietitian. However, don't let the title "diet"itian fool you. My practice is built around helping my clients break the cycle of dieting and finally find freedom with food. We all have to eat multiple times per day to survive. When you are trying to improve your health, all of the mixed messages available in today's world can make it feel like an overwhelming number of decisions. My mission with my clients is to empower them to make those decisions confidently by providing the education and tools they need to nourish their bodies best. Here you will find a compassionate, "healthy at every size" approach. Contrary to what other health professionals and diet culture may have taught you, healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes, and health is not dependent on being a "normal" weight. My goal is to help you cut through the overwhelming amount of (mis)information you may have been given and develop a peaceful and balanced relationship with food. I want you to feel free to enjoy the foods you love, with the confidence to know you are nourishing your body well. Here there are no gimicks, no quick fixes and no empty promises. Simply realisitc, science-driven and pratical advice to help you improve your health, no mater your size. If you are ready to radically change your relationship with food, your body and perhaps even your definition of health, head on over to my "Services and Pricing" page and schedule your discovery call today! |
Background and Practice Philosophies
I remember being a child- 5 or 6 years old- comparing the size of my thighs to those of my classmates. I remember coming to the conclusion that I was “thicker” than most, and that was the very first moment I told myself that something was wrong with my body because it was larger than some.
For the next 20 years, I continually tried diet after diet trying to shrink my body to society's standards of "normal." But seemingly no matter how little I ate, or how much I worked out, it was nearly impossible to achieve and even more impossible to maintain. I began to blame myself for not having enough "control" to do what everyone else was clearly able to do successfully and maintain a slim figure. I was at war with my body and by the time I was 25, I had a full blown eating disorder. I developed stress fractures from over-training. I lost my period due to malnourishment. Mentally, I spent nearly every waking moment obsessing over what I "should" or "should not" eat. Whenever I exceeded my caloire alotment, or ate for sheer pleasure, I chastised myself for letting myself slip. However from the outside, I looked like the picture of health. Inside, I was anything but well.
I knew something needed to change, so I sought help in the form of mental health counseling. When my weight restored to normal, but my period did not return- I sought medical attention. I was informed at that time that I had a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). After having a ultrasound wand shoved up my "change purse" (without warning!), I was informed by a bald, mild-aged man, that my body did not manage nutrients appropriately and I was destined to remain overweight, infertile and likely become insulin resistant if I wasn’t already. I was devastated. As if accepting my body as larger than societal standards wasn’t enough, I now had to face the fact that it was actively working against me.
Fueled with passion, rage and confusion, I set forth to learn everything I could about PCOS, and what I COULD do to manage it. My path led me to the field of dietetics the most transformative 3 years of my life thus far. Through my education I FINALLY learned that food was not the enemy, that there was no right and wrong. There was simply balance. Nourishment could look many different ways and I didn’t have to give up the things I loved in order to treat my body well. I also learned that weight is a bogus measure of health, and that healthy bodies can come in all shapes and sizes. As a result, I began putting what I was learning into practice. The more balanced my diet became, the more energy I had to workout. The better my workouts felt, the more I began to ENJOY them. I gained about 50 lbs in the course of 3 years. To my own very pleasant surprise my body felt better than it ever had, and I very genuinely didn’t care what the scale said, or that I had to buy new clothes. I wasn’t trying to shrink myself anymore. I was finally free.
My mission now is to help you be free too. I want to help people live healthier lives through food, but I also want to teach them that it's not always about the number on the scale. It's about feeling better. You can lose a pants size without losing a pound. You may be genetically predisposed to high blood pressure, or cancer, or being "overweight." None of that should stop you from wanting to live your healthiest and best life. I want to work with you to help you get to be the healthiest version of YOU. That will look different for everyone, but no matter what your health goals are, I will be with you every step of the way to help you reach them. So drop me a line and let's see what good nutrition can do for you!
Love and light,
-Erin
